“Musica libera tutti” (“Music makes everyone free”)
Daily practice in Scampia to grow to the sound of music together
We supported a project called “Musica libera tutti” (“Music makes everyone free”), which was started in 2011 in Scampia, a neighbourhood on the northern outskirts of Naples.
The project’s main purpose is social and cultural promotion through classical music, inspired by the principles of the method developed in Venezuela by Maestro José Antonio Abreu for widespread public musical education, with free and open access for children and young people from all social backgrounds, in order to use music as a tool for social aggregation and cultural growth.
The first beneficiaries are children and young people in the neighbourhood, with the subsequent involvement of their families and the whole community. The main activity is centred around the orchestra and individual instrument workshops, which involve a total of around 60 students (drums, rhythm and percussion, piano, violin, cello, guitar, flute, clarinet, and trumpet).
The activities take place at the Hurtado Centre, a centre for professional training and cultural promotion, as they are convinced of the need to put forward the value of culture as a tool to revive the neighbourhood and consider music to be one of the highest cultural expressions.
Also thanks to the activities of the “Musica libera Tutti” project, some of the students have developed a passion for music, and decided to enrol in music schools or the Conservatorium of Music to continue their studies.
